How the ALICE Report Helps Create a Better Tomorrow

July 19, 2024 | From Our View

Data plays a crucial role in shaping community resources to better serve residents, and thanks to the work of United Way and its annual ALICE (asset-limited, income-constrained, and employed) Report, Michigan 2-1-1 and its many community partners are given a clear picture of what their communities require. By collecting and analyzing data on demographics, income levels and resource utilization, communities can identify the specific needs and challenges faced by ALICE households. This enables communities to better serve residents and build an environment for all to thrive.

Data can reveal gaps in access to affordable housing, healthcare, childcare and other necessities. With this information, community organizations and policymakers can provide programs and funding that directly address these gaps and advocate for additional support, helping ALICE residents secure better employment opportunities and achieve economic stability.

Continuous data monitoring also allows government or nonprofit organizations the ability to assess program effectiveness to make necessary adjustments over time. This ensures that resources are used optimally and that community support systems remain responsive to changing needs. Ultimately, leveraging the data from the ALICE Report fosters a more equitable distribution of resources, enhancing the well-being and stability of ALICE households and strengthening the overall resilience of Michigan’s communities.
